The Maury County Public Library has concluded another year of Summer Feeding, and this year we distributed over 800 meals (breakfast and lunch) to school-aged patrons. The summer food service program, administered by Maury County Public Schools, runs concurrently along our annual Summer Reading and ensures that school-aged children who would otherwise be reliant on meals prepared at school receive the nutrition they need during the summer. According to the Tennessee Department of Human Services, 1 in 4 students faces food/meal insecurity daily; Summer Feeding ensures that children have the nutrition they need to read, learn, and play. The 800 meals provided this summer is the most distributed in the last three years of participation in the program.
Although Summer Feeding has wrapped up at the library, many other sites around middle Tennessee are still distributing meals — individuals can find other participating sites close to them by visiting the Tennessee Department of Human Services website.
